Not everyone who has sJIA or Still’s disease will develop MAS, but those conditions can lead to MAS in some cases. MAS is a serious condition and it takes a team of highly knowledgeable healthcare professionals across many different specialties to get the best possible care.

Remember, communication is key. Being proactive and speaking with your doctors about your or your loved one's symptoms is important. It helps them make well-informed diagnosis and treatment decisions.

Treatment teams vary—here's who may be involved

Throughout different moments of your MAS journey, there will be a variety of professionals who will each play a unique role in your care. These experts may include rheumatologists to take the lead role in directing your treatment plan, infectious‑disease specialists who may step in to rule out or treat infections during your diagnosis, nurses to help you take your medicine, and more. Knowing a bit about each of their roles may help you feel better informed.

RHEUMATOLOGIST

A rheumatologist treats conditions that affect muscles, bones, and joints, and they also specialize in treating immune system disorders like MAS and sJIA. This doctor will help guide the diagnosis and lead the treatment plan for you or your child.

HEMATOLOGIST/
ONCOLOGIST

A “hem/onc” is a doctor who focuses on diseases of the blood and cancer. This doctor specializes in conditions like HLH/MAS and may be involved in your or your child’s treatment plan.

social worker

Many hospitals have social workers on staff to help families cope with diseases like MAS or sJIA. A social worker can help you get the support you might need during this time. This could include emotional support, help navigating the health care system, finding financial resources, and more.

nurses

Multiple nurses may be involved in your or your child’s care. Nurses will assist your doctor with general care, setting up and monitoring infusions, and appropriate care at home.

HEPATOLOGIST/
GASTROENTEROLOGIST

Because conditions like MAS and sJIA can affect the organs like the liver, spleen, and the digestive system, your team may involve a hepatologist or gastroenterologist. A hepatologist helps manage issues with the liver and gastroenterologists help assess and manage issues with the digestive system, including the spleen, stomach, etc.

infectious disease
specialist

An infectious disease specialist diagnoses and treats serious infections, like those that might occur in a patient who has MAS or sJIA.

Critical care

specialist

These doctors treat symptoms of MAS that need attention right away. Critical care specialists usually work in the intensive care unit of a hospital. Pediatric critical care doctors and nurses have special training in treating infants and children.

Pulmonologist

The symptoms of MAS or sJIA can also lead to breathing problems from inflammation in the lungs. A pulmonologist helps protect and restore lung health during MAS flares, and can help manage potential breathing complications throughout the treatment journey.

HLH=hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis.
